Doctoral Programme in Political and Social Sciences

The Department of Political and Social Sciences (SPS) offers a four-year doctoral programme with specialisations in political science, sociology, international relations and social and political theory.
The Department places a strong emphasis on the theoretical and methodological tools required for Ph.D. research, and it favours a multi-faceted approach to research projects and doctoral theses, many of which cut across traditional academic boundaries.
The Department also offers its researchers strong support with specific
methodological issues such as comparative research design, statistical methods, and survey research.
Regularly ranked among the very top departments in political and social sciences in Europe, the Department is strongly connected, through exchange programmes and joint research endeavours, to numerous universities beyond the confines of Europe.
Doctoral supervision is a priority at the EUI, and prospective researchers for the  Ph.D. in Political and Social Sciences  are invited to explore whether their interests fit with those supported by the SPS faculty.

Application deadline

The deadline for applications for the 2015-2016 academic year is 31 January 2015.  Application form, research proposal, reference letters and other required documents must be received by midnight (central European time) on that date.

Applications for Chevening Scholarships now open

The Chevening Secretariat is now accepting applications for the 2015/2016 academic cycle via the Apply page of the Chevening website. Applications will close on 15 November 2014, 23:59 GMT.
Chevening Scholarships are awarded to talented individuals with leadership potential. The scholarships offer financial support to study for a Master’s degree at one of the UK’s leading universities. They are also a great opportunity to become part of an influential network that now numbers over 43,000 alumni worldwide.
This year the programme benefits from significant investment from the UK Government to develop the next cohort of global leaders. There are approximately 1,500 Chevening Awards offered in the 2015/2016 cycle – triple the number available for 2014/2015.
Chevening Secretariat Director, Michael Scott-Kline, said:
‘I am delighted to announce the opening of the 2015/16 competition for Chevening Scholarships. With new partnership awards with Glasgow, Birmingham, Brunel, Edinburgh, Nottingham, Cardiff, Coventry, LSE, LSHTM, Southampton and Swansea Universities, as well as Surrey Business School and Schumacher College, there have never been so many awards on offer nor a better time to apply. I sincerely hope that all aspiring leaders will get online and submit an application before the 15 November deadline.’
Chevening Alumni, Nart Dohjka, from Jordan commented:
‘Being a Chevening Scholar marks a graduate out as someone with drive and ability, and also as someone who wants to contribute to the development of their country. It offers students like me a unique opportunity to gain academic experience and at the same time to broaden our global and social outlooks. Above all, it empowers us with a sense of pride and responsibility. I believe that the role of Chevening scholars is very important in building bridges between their home countries and UK universities. In short, a Chevening Scholar learns how to be an ambassador for knowledge and for leadership.’

iversity.org is creating a platform for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). MOOCs offer unprecedented opportunities for students and professors alike. Students from  all over the world can take courses from professors all over the world (through open courses). Conversely open courses enable professors to extend their reach by teaching tens of thousands of students worldwide.
Access to education can both vastly improve people’s lives and bring about real change to communities as a whole. This is why our courses are free to everyone. This is also why our course offerings are constantly expanding and cover a range of subjects that include medicine, computer science, economics, physics, law, design and philosophy.
We work in close cooperation with instructors, universities and knowledge-based companies to build high-quality courses that are engaging, interactive and fun. Our aim is not to replace the university but to empower academics. Likewise, being based in Europe, we are able to take advantage of the European Credit Transfer System. Our partnered institutions have the opportunity to offer exams that award ECTS credits. We are the only MOOC platform to have courses that offer ECTS credits and working to expand this possibility further.
With MOOCs, education becomes accessible to everyone, anywhere on the globe.
